In the 27 May 1918, 738 men followed their orders to “fight to the last man standing”. From the battle only 40 men survived, 20 as POW’s and 20 made it back to Allied Lines. Their actions held the German advance for a critical 6 hours to allow the Allies time to set up defences outside Paris and ultimately turn the attack.

Through their actions these men earned their Regiment and Battery the Croix de Guerre.

(The French equivalent of the Victoria Cross)
